A Chiropractic Case
Recently I met an old friend of Martin’s for the first time. He was fine for the first few days I saw him and then complained of a very stiff and painful neck. This man is big and in very good shape having worked with his body most of his life. When asked, he blamed his pain on a chiropractor that he had visited before traveling to where we met him. I knew better than to argue with him, but here is what I would have said to him if he had been open to listen.
Having lived within the chiropractic community for fifteen years with my ex-husband who is a DC, I learned quite a lot about the modality, the different techniques that can be offered to patients, and what works and what doesn’t in many cases.
Firstly, when Bill presented to his chiro he did so for a “tune-up” that he felt he wanted before he took a long road trip. In the past his stiffness had been nicely relieved by this chiropractor and he trusted him to make sure he was aligned for his trip.
During the session with this doctor he mentioned several places on his body where he had suffered pain in the past and anticipated that these might flare up on the trip. While the DC was talking with Bill he made a very focused cervical (neck) adjustment. This not only shocked Bill, but he got upset and told the DC that he was not going to permit another neck adjustment. It was more the shock and surprise that irritated Bill rather than any pain.
This reaction is common with many people who are relatively new to chiropractic treatments. Although many people “crack” their knuckles without thinking anything of it, when a skilled doctor makes an appropriate adjustment of the cervical vertibrae which causes an audible sound, it seems surprising to some people. Many chiropractors realize that if somebody knows they are getting ready to receive a neck adjustment, that they tense up, which makes it very difficult. For this reason they “sneak in” and make the adjustment when the patient isn’t expecting it and in this way they can make a vertebral shift while the neck is relaxed.
When joints or vertebrae are adjusted or shifted there is often an audible sound involved. I’ve heard many reasons for this, but the bottom line is that it is not dangerous, and sometimes this occurs and other times it does not.
So, when friend Bill denied the DC his permission to administer a second adjustment to balance out the first one, he did himself a dis-service. Sometimes a single adjustment of the spine at a certain point is sufficient. Often bilateral or several adjustments from varying angles are necessary in order to really set a vertabrae back into alignment.
Bill suffered because he tried to tell his chiropractor how to do his job. And then he spoke badly of this same person who he had trusted previously and who had offered him relief in the past. Too bad.
Healing the Root Causes of Dis-ease
When people present to health practitioners with pain or physical ailments they often want immediate healing. The drug industry was created to provide meds that will take away pain and symptoms. But, drugs don’t usually “heal” the root cause of what created the pain or ailment in the first place.
My extensive studies have helped me to believe and work under the following premises:
- Our thoughts form our reality
- Our perception of reality impacts us energetically
- We hold the emotional impacts of “life” in our body and its electro-magnetic field
- When we become overwhelmed with “life” and the emotional/energetic bombardment, the stress is stored in our weakest physical link
- This weak link or physical location begins to feel painful and break down
- Dis-ease moves into that location, and if change doesn’t occur, then the dis-ease worsens and begins to spread
- Physicians have created labels for the various forms of dis-ease that manifest in our physical bodies, and we know them as diseases, ailments, conditions
- Change can bring on healing – especially if the change occurs around the root cause of the pain or illness.
We all have the power to make necessary changes in order to heal ourselves. And, various practitioners also have specific ways that they can provide change to support our healing.
- chiropractors change structure to enable energy flow;
- acupuncturists manipulate the energy flow of meridians to enact healing change;
- massage therapists and other body workers move energy around that has been stuck in tissues and joints;
- life coaches guide people to see for themselves where they are stuck in their lives and how they can most easily and quickly shift in a better direction;
- facilitators of meridian tapping techniques like EFT can help clear stuck emotions out of the body and its electro-magnetic field, thus eliminating the energetic stressor so that the body can heal.
There are many other ways that each of us can make basic life changes that will help to clear pain, suffering, negative cycles, illness, anxiety.
I invite you to make a list of all of the things you can do in your own life to initiate simple changes that might have profound healing effects. If you don’t know where to start you may wish to contact a coach for just a few sessions to get you started. A coach who also uses meridian tapping techniques like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can teach you the tools that will empower you to stay healthy and happy for the rest of your life!
I wish you the best on your journey of conscious living and transformation!
A Clearer View of Life Priorities – After a Break
Tonight I arrived home after two weeks of fun travel, events with friends, connection with the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains, time away to think and feel. I am back and cannot sleep because my head is spinning with ways that I want to change my life, my business, my focus, my priorities, my health, my landscaping, my interior decoration, among just a few things rattling around in my head!
Even though I have at times resented vacations because they disrupt the flow of life, this is actually a blessing for me! I am rather intense at times and can easily flip into a Type A personality and workaholic. This is not a pretty sight, is not good for my personal relationship with my mate, is stressful and generally unhealthy when I put my work before my SELF. It is good to have a break where I can look back at the life I’ve been living and have a clear perspective, based on my innermost values, of how I’d like to adjust the direction in which I’ve been heading and reshape my vision of where I am going.
Being away, having limited access to internet and telephone, depending on others to keep my business running, experiencing the lifestyles of friends we visited, changing eating habits, exercising at 9000 ft. altitude, experiencing new situations and adjusting my attitude accordingly, has all given me a new and broader perspective of my own life and its patterns and habits. I am grateful that I’ve had this experience – so that I can change and evolve.
One of the main concepts that I am going to adopt now more into my life is the concept of simplifying everything. Living out of a suitcase and a borrowed car, visiting others, and moving to several venues during a two-week period shows me that I am very happy without so much “stuff”. I also notice that I learned how to streamline my internet access during the trip and unsubscribed from many lists and reported lots of spam – so that I won’t be bothered by so much in-coming mail in the future. I also realize that I didn’t miss the weekly meetings, deadlines, stresses that I place on myself to jump through various hoops – just because others are doing something in a certain way. I feel that now I’ll be able to return to that path of honoring mySELF before honoring anybody or anything else, and the result will be that I will be able to better serve my clients, friends, family – and will have much more FUN doing it!!
It is easy for me to coach clients to see where they might be out of balance. Sometimes it takes a trip away from my life to see where my own life is out of balance. Now I will put back into place the best practices for my own energy management, keeping my highest values of Peace, Love, Joy in mind, so that these values are supported and reflected in every task that I perform.
I am grateful that I’ve had this opportunity!
And, as synchronicity often happens, I have just come upon a wonderful short video clip from the Abraham-Hicks work that reflects on this focus on contrasts in life in order to evolve to a new level. Life & Work in Balance – Still Learning…
When I was in my twenties I was on the fast track to building my dynasty. I was hired to create an international training institute and my bosses were 24 CEO’s & university Presidents who wanted me to support their international employees, customers, students. I was a one-woman show – performing wonderfully exciting entrepreneurial tasks for a team of organizations who would benefit from my work.
During my four-year tenure with my English Language and Multicultural Institute I created the institute from the ground up, did all marketing, hiring of 17 employees, curriculum design for six levels of full-time training, logistics & strategic planning, created the infrastructure for student housing, provided orientation to over 700 students from all over the world, implemented a computer-assisted instruction learning lab, co-created a winning proposal with NCR to provide training to 20 Saudi bankers as they decided to buy NCR computers for the Bank of Riyadh, among many other tasks. I was a busy girl!!
A year after I left ELMI I started my own management consulting and corporate training business which I made successful and enjoyed for over twenty years. I have always been driven to be a top achiever.
Over the years I have noticed a pattern occurring which I am in the process of changing, however. In each of the areas where I have put my career focus I have thrust myself fully into my work. A sensitive type A personality can become a basketcase if she is not careful, and over the years I have seemed to thrive on stress. This is an old pattern and now I am consciously focusing on changing that.
I am no longer in my twenties or thirties and I’ve already built and left several small empires of my own making. The last time I checked, ELMI was still alive & well twenty-five years after I created it – being managed by people I had originally hired. People in many corporations remember me and the impact that I had on their lives and careers at certain times in the past. Now my focus is on being very comfortable in my own life as I help others learn to be more comfortable in their lives.
I am currently on vacation and as I look back on the weeks before I left town I realize that the old patterns are still in me and impacting my peace-of-mind. In the last year I have consciously amped up my business and focused on marketing the “new internet/ social marketing way. This is a good way to get attention and share information, and it can not only be stressful to me, but it can also be a bit bothersome to my loyal followers. From my vacation perspective I can easily delete all of the e-mail spam that I am receiving daily from sincere service providers like me. I don’t need their information sent on such a regular basis. When in my home office it seems so much more important than it seems now. I’ve already contacted my team to say that I want to redirect my focus so that I can offer more quality and less quantity. I want to really be there focused for my coaching clients, and have more time and peace in my own life. I’m stepping off of the hampster wheel and will market in my own ways. This has worked in the past, so why not let it work for me now??
I really enjoy my writing and sharing, so this will be one of the areas where I put my energy. It is much more rewarding to all of us than the e-mails and marketing notices. And, maybe along the way something that I say will provide a key idea to you that will impact your life for the better too!
